The National Eisteddfod of Wales is the largest cultural festival of its kind in Europe and one of the oldest manifestations of Welsh culture and heritage, promoting the Welsh language and the arts. The first Eisteddfod was held in Cardigan back in 1176, but was revived and held in its present form in 1860. It takes place annually, alternating between north & south wales.
The crown is awarded to the author of the best work in free verse.
